Nonprofit Group, Real Estate Company to Donate $100,000
The Humanities Foundation® and a Daniel Island-based real estate investment and development company have pledged $100,000 to address immediate and long-term needs of Hurricane Katrina victims.
"Like everybody else, we've been watching the television and felt something had to be done, and we wanted to give enough to have a major impact," said Tracy Doran, president of the local nonprofit founded in 1992.
"We want to encourage other people to donate as well."
The foundation used its $50,000 contribution along with $50,000 from the James Doran Co. as seed money for the Humanities--Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund, said Doran, whose husband, Robert, is company president.
The Humanities Foundation® is working with organizations from the Gulf Coast to determine how the money should be spent, Tracy Doran said.
Initially, it will provide emergency supplies, such as water, food and clothing, as well as transitional housing options.
