John A. Henry Jr., vice president of real estate for Humanities Foundation® promoted to Executive Director

John A. Henry Jr., vice president of real estate for the non-profit organization Humanities Foundation®, has been promoted to executive director.

With extensive background in real estate development and legal affairs, Henry brings value and expertise to the foundation, whose primary mission is to develop affordable housing units for low to moderate income individuals and families.

In his new role, Henry oversees all activities of the foundation, including the funding and development for the foundation's affordable housing units and other outreach and assistance programs.

Before coming to Humanities Foundation® in April 2005, Henry was a founder and principal of Washco Retail Group LLC, a real estate investment and development company that focused on the development of retail shopping centers in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Henry also served as real estate counsel for Pyramid Management Group Inc., one of the largest privately held developers, owners and managers of shopping malls in the U.S. Henry also served as an associate attorney with the law offices of Holland & Knight, LLP.

Henry graduated from Bucknell University with a bachelor's degree in both history and political science and earned his law degree from the Washington and Lee University.

"The number one priority of the foundation is to provide affordable housing to as many low-income individuals and families as possible," says Henry. "The goal is to continue making an impact in the Charleston area while expanding our reach to other areas throughout the Southeast."

Since its founding in 1992, Humanities Foundation® has been a leader in addressing the affordable housing crisis. In addition to its primary mission to develop affordable housing units, it also provides a range of services for residents, and in the community, that serve to alleviate problems associated with homelessness and affordable housing.

The foundation has developed over 600 rental units of affordable housing – with another 156 units under construction and 72 units in pre-development - providing homes for more than 850 low-to-moderate-income families, including those with special needs such as the disabled, single mothers and senior citizens.
