When we opened for business, Main Street was a way of life.  For James Doran Company, it still is.

Founded as a shipping company in the late 1800s by James Doran, a second generation Charlestonian, James Doran Company became one of the largest shipping companies in Charleston by the turn of the century. Recognizing growth opportunities and the value of diversification, the company quickly expanded into real estate and the family legacy continued throughout the 20th Century.

In the early 1990’s, JDC identified the commercial sector of the real estate industry as one poised for growth and likely to yield attractive returns to real estate investors, developers and operators. Acting on this opportunity, JDC gained recognition throughout the Southeast by developing and selling more than 2.09 million square feet of “grocery-anchored” and “power-center” retail developments. At the same time, JDC implemented a program to identify, purchase and renovate underperforming office and multi-family assets in the Atlanta market, acquiring approximately 438,000 sq. ft. of office space and 284 multi-family units.

JDC eventually sold its portfolio of retail, office and multi-family holdings for a sum totaling over $306 million, capitalizing on their extensive experience, ability to identify attractive projects and careful attention to asset management to ensure the highest possible returns for investors. Moving into the 21st Century, company leadership saw the opportunity with mixed-use town centers and expanded focus to concentrate on this real estate type.

Under the leadership of Robert J. Doran, Jr. (the great grandson of company founder James Doran) and Robert’s son, Shane J.
